A great movie theater. I have been in SF for 12 odd years and have seen the loss of too many indie movie houses. Yes, the seats kinda were small harkening back to an era when Americans weren't fat (and they all smoked and ate steak and drank martinis etc). There is a nice popcorn machine there with some old timey popcorn action if that is your thing. The staff seems to range between suspiciously young teens to the usual disgruntled hipsters. The movies are excellent. Not Lumiere excellent but excellent in a struggling-yet- not-irrelevant excellent kinda way. Not likely to see Herzog here, but some foreign language gems seem to play here and no where else. I rank this, along with the Lumiere, as a place to see a film *because* it is the there whether or not I've read about it. Sure, they also show some mainstream movies, but I'm not going to have a stroke over it. I recommend you don't either. In the gripes department it's not always easy to find out what is playing here in advance. The local papers sometimes showcase them and then there is the phone. A website would be nice with upcoming movies.
